As South Africa accelerates its transition toward renewable energy, protecting vast utility-scale assets has become a mission-critical challenge. Located on the border of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, the Marble Hall Solar Farm presented a massive security vulnerability: a multi-hectare footprint targeted by highly organised copper theft and vandalism syndicates. Legacy security systems were no longer enough, leaving the site exposed to critical blind spots and a relentless stream of costly false alarms.
To secure this vital clean-energy asset, Cable Network Specialists (CNS) engineered a next-generation solution that treats industrial security as a direct extension of high-performance network infrastructure. By deploying a low-latency industrial IP network backbone and seamlessly integrating Odet SmartSense fibre-optic detection with Mobotix AI-powered thermal cameras, CNS transformed a vulnerable remote perimeter into an automated, self-verifying digital fortress.
Renewable energy infrastructure is sweeping across South Africa, but remote facilities like the Marble Hall Solar Farm face an escalating threat: sophisticated, organized syndicates targeting high-value copper cabling and solar components.
Spanning a massive, multi-hectare footprint, the farm’s remote location presented unique security vulnerabilities. Traditional electric fencing and standard CCTV networks were entirely inadequate for a site of this scale. They created blind spots, left the interior vulnerable to rapid breaches, and triggered a continuous stream of false alarms caused by shifting weather, blowing debris, and local wildlife. For the operators, every false alarm meant deploying expensive armed response units, draining operational budgets while leaving the site exposed to real security threats.
To protect this critical clean-energy asset, the client required an automated, intelligent, and completely integrated perimeter defence ecosystem. Cable Network Specialists was brought in to design and deploy the solution.
CNS approached the challenge by treating physical security as an extension of high-performance network infrastructure. Rather than installing isolated security products, our engineering team designed a layered, software-defined ecosystem where the physical network backbone actively drives automated security intelligence.
CNS introduced the cutting-edge Odet SmartSense fibre-optic detection system to the perimeter structure.
How it Works: Our team reticulated specialized optical fibre sensor cables directly onto the perimeter fence line. The system injects laser light through the fibre, measuring minute mechanical micro-vibrations caused by cutting, climbing, or lifting the boundary structure.
Eradicating Nuisance Alarms: Unlike legacy seismic wires, the Odet system features localized edge-processing algorithms. CNS programmed the system to isolate and ignore natural environmental factors—such as high bushveld winds or small animals—while maintaining absolute sensitivity to human interference.
Bandwidth Efficiency: By processing data at the fence line, network traffic is kept below 10 Kbps per zone, preventing network congestion across the vast site.
A perimeter alert is only as good as its verification. CNS seamlessly integrated the Odet system with a high-capacity network of Mobotix dual-lens AI thermal cameras.
Instant Automated Tracking: The moment the Odet fibre optic sensor detects a boundary breach, it transmits a low-latency TCP/IP signal across the CNS network backbone. The nearest Mobotix camera instantly pans, zooms, and focuses on the exact zone of the disturbance.
Total Darkness Reliability: Operating in the remote bushveld means dealing with pitch-black conditions and seasonal dust storms. Mobotix thermal technology bypasses the need for ambient lighting, tracking intruder heat signatures across immense distances.
Deep Learning Analytics: Embedded AI categorises targets in real-time, distinguishing between human profiles, vehicles, and benign movement. Concurrently, the thermal sensors monitor the solar arrays for localized heat spikes, doubling as an early-warning fire detection system for the electrical inverters.
By bridging advanced network reticulation with intelligent edge technologies, CNS transformed a highly vulnerable utility site into a secure, automated facility.
Zero-Guesswork Monitoring: Control room operators no longer waste time identifying where a breach is occurring. The automated pairing of Odet sensors and Mobotix cameras provides immediate visual confirmation of threats.
Drastic Operational Cost Reductions: By eliminating over 95% of false alarms, the solar farm has minimised unnecessary armed response deployments, saving thousands of Rands in monthly operational overheads.
Uninterrupted Power Generation: By proactively stopping cable theft before a breach can penetrate the inner solar arrays, CNS helped ensure the facility maintains its critical power delivery commitments to the national grid.
Fully Compliant Infrastructure: The entire surveillance and data logging layout was designed to meet POPI Act compliance, ensuring data transmission and footage storage adhere directly to South African legislative requirements.
The Marble Hall Solar Farm case study highlights what can be achieved when expert technical design meets industrial necessity.
With over 35 years of engineering experience, CNS continues to build, support, and protect the infrastructure that powers South Africa’s future.
