At Cable Network Specialists, we take pride in being at the intersection of traditional infrastructure and future-ready digital solutions. One of our most significant undertakings has been our work on the Belfast Implementation Project (BIP) in Mpumalanga.

As a cornerstone of South Africa’s transition toward Industry 4.0 in mining, CNS was tasked with ensuring that this “first-of-its-kind” digital mine had the connectivity it needed to thrive.

Building South Africa’s First Digital Mine

The Belfast Implementation Project, an R3.3 billion investment by Exxaro, was designed with a clear vision: to create a high-tech, digital-first coal mine that utilises real-time data to maximise safety and productivity. Unlike traditional mines, every piece of equipment and every worker’s performance is monitored remotely. This level of automation requires more than just a standard network; it requires a robust, high-capacity digital ecosystem.

Precision Infrastructure

To support the digital ambitions of our partners and the connectivity backbone provided by MTN, CNS stepped in to design and execute the intricate internal networking and security layers of the site.

Our involvement focused on three critical pillars:

Integrated IP Security & Surveillance

We implemented a comprehensive IP camera system and perimeter intruder detection. Given the scale of the Belfast site, our solutions ensure that every corner of the facility is visible to the control room in real-time.

Networking and Reticulation

Our team managed the sophisticated network design, including the installation of high-performance switches and fibre-optic reticulation. We ensured that the “bits managing the watts” had a reliable path to travel, connecting field sensors to central data hubs.

Wireless Communication Support

Working alongside MTN’s tower infrastructure, CNS assisted in the technical setup of communication cabinets and satellite tracking systems, ensuring that even in remote locations, data flow remains uninterrupted.

A Smarter, Safer, More Efficient Operation

By choosing CNS as their technical infrastructure partner, our clients at the Belfast site realised several mission-critical benefits:

Unprecedented Connectivity

With a network built to handle high volumes of data, the mine can track assets and employee performance with zero lag.

Enhanced Site Safety

Our advanced IP security systems provide a 24/7 “eye in the sky,” significantly reducing the risk of unauthorised access and improving safety protocols for workers on the ground.

Future-Proof Scalability

The infrastructure laid by CNS is designed for longevity. As the mine expands its digital capabilities through 2040, the core network remains ready to integrate new technologies like AI-driven analytics.

Operational Excellence

By minimising network downtime, CNS helped the project achieve its first coal production ahead of schedule.

Leading the Way

The Belfast Implementation Project stands as a testament to what is possible when expert engineering meets digital innovation. At CNS, we don’t just lay cables; we build the nervous systems that power South Africa’s most ambitious industrial projects.

What is Digital Power and why does it matter for my business?

Digital Power refers to the integration of digital and internet technology with power electronics. For your business, this means more efficient energy conversion, smarter monitoring, and reduced operational costs compared to traditional, non-digital energy systems.

By attending this programme, our technicians have gained advanced certification in smart solar technology. This ensures that the solutions we install are optimised for the highest possible energy yield and are compliant with the latest international safety standards.
Yes. We provide turn-key solutions that bridge the gap between traditional cabling and modern digital power. We can assess your current setup and implement digital monitoring tools that allow you to manage your energy consumption in real-time.
ICT (Information and Communication Technology) allows “bits to manage watts.” Through sensors and software, we can monitor generation and storage performance, predict maintenance needs before failures occur, and ensure your system is operating at peak efficiency.
Absolutely. With over 35 years of experience and a commitment to continuous upskilling through programmes like Huawei’s, we have the personnel and technical expertise to manage extensive projects for South Africa’s premier companies.
